Cherrapunjee

Cherrapunjee, better known as Sohra, is the biggest tourist attraction of Meghalaya. It is a town found in East Khasi Hills District, 53 kilometres from Shillong city. It was established as a Sub-Division in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya in 1982. It has beautiful gorges covered with dense pine trees, breathtaking views, mesmerising waterfall and astonishing living root bridges made from rubber tree roots. The locals of this region are also very heartwarming and hospitable.

The lake situated just 15 kilometres from Shillong on the Guwahati-Shillong National Highway has left a lasting impression on each and every person who has come to this lake.

Mawsynram

Mawsynram

Mawsynram is a small village located in the Khasi Hills in the state of Meghalaya in North-East India. It is found 56 kilometres from Shillong.

It is reportedly the wettest place on Earth, Mawsynram receives an average annual rainfall of 11,872 mm (about 39 feet). However, as there has been no meteorological department office in the area and for all practical and statistical purposes, Cherrapunjee has been recorded as the wettest place in the world.

The Mawsynram tour covers Mawjymbuin Cave, Ritmawksir Viewpoint (Mawphlang sacred forest), Khreng Khreng Viewpoint, Jakrem Hot Spring.

The Village of Nartiang is significant for its Summer Palace of the Jaintia King whose Capital was Jaintiapur. The remnants of the Summer Palace is located on a hillock approximately two kilometres from the Nartiang market.

At present there lies a Hindu temple in the vicinity. The priests present now are direct descendants of the original priests that came from Jaintiapur.
